Why Houston is different

Crane work on the Gulf Coast

The Houston Ship Channel, the refineries and chemical plants from Pasadena to Baytown, and the Golden Triangle around Beaumont keep a lot of cranes moving. Turnarounds bring in crews on tight deadlines. Plants often need site-specific rules on top of national certification.

That means training here usually comes in two forms: individual operators getting certified or recertified, and employers who need a whole crew trained or evaluated before a job. Both are covered below.

How it works

From request to class date

  1. Tell us what you need. Crane type, number of people, experience level and where you are.
  2. An accredited provider reviews it. They match you to the right course: prep, full training, recertification or on-site.
  3. You get dates and pricing. Open-enrollment class or training at your site.

Common questions

Do crane operators in Texas need to be certified?
Yes, for most cranes used in construction. The federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1926.1427) requires construction crane operators to be certified by an accredited testing organization or through an audited employer program, and evaluated by their employer. Texas does not issue a separate state crane operator license, so the federal rule is the one that applies.
How long is a crane certification good for?
Five years. OSHA sets a five-year limit for certifications from accredited testing organizations, and NCCCO certifications are valid for five years.
How long does crane training take?
It depends on your experience and the crane. Experienced operators often take a short prep course before the written and practical exams. New operators need more seat time. A provider can tell you which course fits once they know your background.
Can training happen at our plant or jobsite?
Yes. Many Gulf Coast employers bring training to their own site so crews train on the equipment they actually use. See on-site crane training.
Who runs this site?
Houston Crane Training is an independent guide. It doesn't run classes or give exams. When you request a quote, your request goes to an accredited crane training provider. More about this site.
