Plant & shop cranes
Overhead crane training in Houston
Bridge, gantry and monorail crane operator training for Houston-area manufacturers, fabrication shops, warehouses and plant maintenance crews.
Who needs it
Overhead cranes are everywhere in Houston industry: fabrication and machine shops, pipe yards, valve and pump manufacturers, warehouses and plant maintenance buildings. OSHA's general-industry rule for these cranes (29 CFR 1910.179) says only designated personnel may operate them.
What overhead crane training covers
- Pre-shift inspection: hooks, wire rope or chain, brakes, limit switches and controls
- Pendant, radio remote and cab controls
- Load control: smooth starts and stops, avoiding swing, never carrying loads over people
- Rigging basics for common shop lifts
- Lockout and what to do when something is wrong
- A hands-on evaluation on your equipment
Training at your facility
Overhead crane training works best on site, on the cranes your people actually use. It can usually be scheduled around shifts. See on-site training.
Common questions
Do overhead crane operators need certification?
OSHA's general-industry rule for overhead and gantry cranes says only designated personnel may operate them. It doesn't require third-party certification, but many employers and insurers want documented training and a hands-on evaluation.
Is pendant-operated crane training different from cab-operated?
The safety basics are the same, but pendant and remote operation have their own hazards, mostly because the operator is on the floor near the load. Training should match the controls your people use.
